Savan Rathore and Afrazul: Victims of Hate Crime
We
are living in society now on buzz due to incident of hate crimes occurring in
our vicinity. Now a days disgusting act of one Shambhunath Raigar is in issue.
As shown in video, he brutally killed one labourer from West Bengal while
giving "Love Jehad" as raison-detre for his heinous act. Some people
came forward to justify anger and brutality of Raigar. On the other hand Govt
of West Bengal & Rajasthan have supported the victim and his family. Govt
of West Bengal has declared Job for kin of Victim. However, Accused is under
police custody and as per Govt of Rajsthan's directive, trail shall be held in
Fast Track Court. This is good initiative. All steps should be taken to affirm
that Society and Law will not tolerate such Hate Crimes.
On
the other hand, like the Colum attached with this post (http://www.opindia.com/2017/01/justice-still-eludes-pune-teen-who-was-burnt-to-death-for-being-a-hindu/), other columns were
there which narrate story of one Savan Rathore who were burnt alive in Pune
allegdely after confirming his religion. As per reports, role of Police was
dubious. But involvement of social Media, activists and specially Advocate
Ramesh Kumar Rathore, action of Law Enforcement Agencies were streamlined. It
is also reported that compensation was announced at that time but not yet
received by the victim's family. But neither case was placed in any Fast Track
kind of mechanism nor was any government job offered to kin of the victim.
Apparently
both accused involved in both cases were appeared to be burdened with Hate
Crime Syndrome. Crime was not actually similar but involved same sense of
brutility. But Role of Law Enforcement Agencies and Political Parties
afterwards make the difference. The difference which provide "clue"
to the religion of Victim vis-a-vis the Accused. Whatever narration,
explanation or clarification be given any difference in handling the afterwards
scenario will affect the thinking process of different sections of people and
smoothness of our social fabric. Although reference of Savan Rathore in this
time, might be appeared to be regressive. But it is important to understand
that iota of doubt of biasness in treatment of victim’s case or their kin may
affect society in longer run.
What
action government or society will take to mitigate the causes which germinate
Hate Crime Mentality in people shall be important for consideration. But as of
now, quick steps need to be taken to repose people's trust. Unbiased approach
towards the Victim of the Crime ought to be shown irrespective of Religion,
Caste, Creed or Gender etc. Savan Rathore was as much important for our social
fabric as Afrazul.
