Zero Discrimination Day
Today UN is celebrating Zero Discrimination Day. It is admitted fact that discrimination remains widespread – gender, nationality, age, ethnic origin, sexual orientation or religion can all unfortunately be the basis for some form of discrimination. UN's theme of this year’s Day is ‘Stand Out,’ and encourages everyone to stand for fair and just societies. People are being urged to value and embrace diversity and recognize the diverse set of talents and skills that each person brings – talents that enrich society and strengthen communities.
We the people of India claim that we are in Society which slam Discrimination. We have Constitution which bless us with guiding principles of governance without any sort of discrimination. We have judiciary which is committed to the issue.
But if keep an eye on the suggestive instances of discrimination by UN; i.e.; imagine a young woman newly diagnosed with HIV being told by her doctor that she must be sterilized, a sex worker facing violence or abuse from a nurse, a disabled person denied access to proper advice about their sexual health, a gay man frightened of disclosing his sexuality to medical staff, a person who injects drugs dying after being refused treatment or a transgender person attempting suicide after being turned away from a clinic; I personally feel that there is generation gap between Standards of Discrimination transpired by UN and our societal approach.
In fact, we are living in the World which is so diverse that most of the times seems painted with discrimination. But in view of above in terms of day to day NEWS reports in Media, it appears that discrimination is so deep rooted in our identity that we need a cultural overhaul to overcome.
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon asserted that when the most marginalized and vulnerable face discrimination and abuse, all of us are diminished. The United Nations is strongly committed to upholding human rights and dignity for all.
Though Indian Media has not given importance to UN initiative of Zero Discrimination Day but We the people of India needs to channelize our energy to cover the generation gap between UN standards and our reality.
